Altenstühlen with Axel and Angelika

Kirsten, a volunteering buddy from Wiston, had raved about a wonderful HelpX host she had found not too far away from Hamburg. We visited for a weekend earlier in the year but missed the hosts, Axel and Angelika, who had been on the road. We managed another visit just as autumn was setting in.

Axel and Angelika are very experienced and successful in self-sufficiency, growing and consuming their own vegetables and fruit throughout the year and only buying in dairy products and a little meat. They keep sheep, which, over the years, have become more like pets. They must have welcomed hundreds of volunteers from all over the world over the years, and were also very happy to help me improve my German.
